Circa 1976. Earlier this day, Karen Witt and I met photographer Phil Miller outside the Boston Public Library. We smiled hugely at him, recognizing another gimp. Seeing two lovely ladies sitting on a fountain, he smiled in return. Is that a pylon youre
wearing?” I asked him. He scowled and asked if it was so obvious.
We both pulled up our pant legs, and I said, “We’re amputees,
too!” He finally smiled back. He later offered to buy us both lunch
if we would stay so he could take more pictures. We three became fast
famous friends.
